Despite his success, he felt trapped. His record label kept pushing him to maintain the clean-cut surfer image, something he no longer related to. “If I had a choice, I would have continued acting,” he revealed, “I didn’t anticipate that recording an album would tie me down for years.”
One of the most painful moments of his life came in 1979 when a tragic car accident left his close friend Roland Winkler paralyzed. Leif carried the guilt with him for years, feeling responsible for the accident.
However, in a powerful moment of healing during a 1999 episode of Behind the Music, Leif was reunited with Roland. To his surprise, Roland forgave him, telling him that he didn’t hold him responsible. “That was as raw and real as it gets,” Leif said, wiping away years of guilt.

After spending over 12 years caring for his parents, he knows the weight of responsibility and loss. “It was the most difficult responsibility I’ve ever taken on,” he shared. Caring for his parents took a toll on him, as he often did it alone, without much help from his siblings.
Since their passing, Leif has been dealing with the emotional process of sorting through their belongings. He’s also faced the difficulty of watching his sister Dawn go through brain surgery. “It’s been a lot,” he shared, acknowledging how these personal challenges shaped his recent years.
Reconnecting with Fans
Despite the years of ups and downs, Leif has maintained a connection with his fans. In recent years, he’s reemerged on social media, sharing updates on his life and offering a glimpse into his more personal journey.
In a video posted on October 23, 2024, Leif encouraged his followers to vote, showing that he’s still very much involved in civic matters. Just a few weeks later, he promoted his new merchandise on November 10, 2024, through another video.
