John and I were soaking in the bliss of our anniversary on a beach, enjoying the warm sun and the sound of the waves, when suddenly, a woman in a white swimsuit ran up to us. She dropped to her knees right in front of him and said his name. My heart froze. Who was she? And what on earth did she want with my husband? I was about to get the surprise of my life.
I jolted awake, my heart pounding in the empty bed. “John! No, don’t leave me… John!” I screamed. It had all been a dream—a haunting nightmare of John leaving me on a tropical beach. The morning light was just starting to peek through the curtains, but I couldn’t shake the unease in my chest.
“Rosa? You okay?” John’s voice came from the hallway, filled with concern. He stepped into the room, his face serious.
I let out a deep sigh of relief. “Yeah, just a bad dream. What time is it?”
John smiled, the worry fading from his eyes. “Almost 9. I made coffee,” he said. Then, with a playful grin, he added, “And… happy anniversary, sweetheart.”
My eyes widened as the realization hit me—it was our 10th wedding anniversary! I jumped out of bed and wrapped my arms around him. “Happy anniversary, John! I can’t believe it’s been ten years.”
John’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Close your eyes and hold out your hands,” he instructed.
When I opened them, I found two plane tickets in my palms. “The Dominican Republic? Are you serious?” I gasped, my voice full of disbelief.
John grinned, clearly enjoying my reaction. “We leave in three hours.”
I squealed with excitement and covered his face with kisses. “I can’t believe you did this!”
We packed in a rush, my heart racing with joy and anticipation. As I threw clothes into a suitcase, I felt a little guilty—John had been working so hard lately, and I hadn’t seen much of him. This trip was exactly what we needed to find each other again.
The flight felt like a blur of excitement, and as we stepped off the plane, the tropical air greeted us like a warm hug. The drive along the coast to our resort left me breathless, the turquoise waters sparkling under the sun.
“How long have you been planning this?” I asked, staring out at the endless ocean.
John smiled mysteriously. “It wasn’t easy, especially with all those late nights at the office.”
I felt a wave of guilt again and reached for his hand. “I’m sorry I’ve been so caught up in my own world. I know your work has been tough.”
He gave my hand a squeeze. “That’s why we’re here—no work, no distractions. Just us.”
When we arrived at the resort, I could hardly believe my eyes. Palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the distant sound of waves was like music to my ears. Our room had a private balcony overlooking the ocean, and it felt like a slice of heaven.
John slipped his arms around my waist from behind and whispered, “What do you think? Worth the wait?”
I leaned back into his embrace. “It’s perfect,” I murmured. “You’re perfect.”
The next few days were pure bliss. We lounged on the beach, sipped coconut water, and danced under the moonlight. On the third evening, we watched the sunset together, the sky painted in brilliant shades of orange and pink. I rested my head on John’s chest, feeling at peace.
“Why haven’t we done this before?” I asked, tracing lazy circles on his arm with my finger.
John chuckled. “There’s no better time than our anniversary. Plus, I wanted it to be a surprise.”
I smiled, thinking about my own surprise for him. My hand drifted to my stomach, where our little secret was growing. I had found out I was pregnant just before the trip and had been waiting for the perfect moment to tell him.
Before I could say anything, John suggested, “How about a walk on the beach?”
We strolled along the shoreline, our feet sinking into the soft sand, the water lapping at our ankles. I reached into my pocket for the small gift box I had brought, ready to share my news. But just as I opened my mouth, a woman in a white swimsuit came running toward us. She dropped to her knees right in front of John.
“John! You’re the love of my life. It’s time you stop pretending and tell her everything. Will you marry me?” she pleaded, her eyes locked on his.
My heart sank. I stood frozen, my mind spinning. Was this some kind of cruel joke? John, however, burst into laughter. My heart pounded in my chest, trying to make sense of what was happening.
John helped the woman up and hugged her, which only added to my confusion. I felt tears prick at my eyes and managed to stammer, “John, who is she?”
John, still grinning, quickly explained, “Rosa, this is Julia. We went to college together. It’s a prank—she promised to get back at me for a joke I played on her years ago.”
Julia laughed, looking a little sheepish. “I couldn’t resist.”
I let out a shaky breath, relief flooding over me. “I almost had a heart attack, you two.”
John pulled me close, kissing my forehead. “I’m sorry, Rosa. I had no idea she was here.”
As the tension melted away, I remembered the gift box in my pocket. “Actually, I have something for you too,” I said, handing it to him.
John opened the box to reveal a delicate silver necklace with a tiny locket shaped like baby feet. His eyes went wide with surprise. “You’re… we’re… Oh my God, Rosa!”
I beamed with joy. “I’m pregnant!”
John laughed and scooped me up, spinning me around in the sand. Julia cheered and offered to take a picture, capturing our moment of happiness against the backdrop of the setting sun.
Hand in hand, we walked back to the resort, hearts brimming with excitement. This trip wasn’t just a celebration of our anniversary—it was the start of a thrilling new chapter. With John by my side, I couldn’t wait to see where life would take us next.
