Why Some People Purposefully Put Top Sheets On Upside Down

Making your bed can be such a hassle, right? Our moms showed us how to do it when we were kids, but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier now. Most beds have a fitted sheet, a top sheet, and either a quilt, comforter, or duvet.

You don’t need to be a genius to make your bed, but there are some tricks that can make it a lot easier. Believe it or not, many of us have been putting our top sheets on the wrong way—inside out!

Sullivan May from Southern Living has the solution. According to May, the patterned side of the top sheet should face downward.

At first, this might seem strange, but it makes perfect sense when you fold the top sheet over the duvet, comforter, or quilt. The patterned side will show and look much nicer.

May explains, “Fold the top sheet down an inch or two over the top of your quilt. Then, if you fold them both over one more time, your bed will start to look just like the ones you see in hotels.”

These simple housekeeping tips can really spruce up your bedroom, making it look neat and thoughtfully put together. To take it a step further, try using two pillows with pillowcases that match your sheet set and two more with pillowcases that match your quilt or duvet cover.

With these tips, you’ll never stress about making your bed again. A big thanks to Sullivan May of Southern Living for this fantastic advice!
