Halloween Surprises
It was the first Halloween without her husband, and Kate was determined to make it a special night for her daughter, Holly. She wanted to lift Holly’s spirits and fill the evening with joy. The crisp autumn air was filled with the scent of fallen leaves as Kate transformed their yard into a Halloween wonderland.
She hung plastic bats from the trees, placed flickering pumpkins on the porch, and draped fake cobwebs everywhere. Meanwhile, little Holly was busy arranging her favorite pink dolls and fluffy teddy bear right beside the glowing jack-o’-lanterns, completely focused on making her own cozy little display.
“Honey,” Kate said with a gentle smile, kneeling beside Holly, “Halloween’s supposed to be a bit spooky, not just cute.” But Holly, just five years old, tilted her head in confusion, still clutching her teddy bear tightly. “Why does it have to be spooky, Mommy?” she asked, her big eyes wide with innocence. Kate chuckled softly, touched by her daughter’s sweetness.
She knelt down to Holly’s level. “It’s just how Halloween is,” she explained. “We dress up and pretend to be scary, all for fun. But you know, maybe a little cute won’t hurt this year.”
Excitement bubbled up in Holly. “Mommy, can I wear the costume Daddy made me last year?” she asked, her eyes shining brightly. Kate’s heart sank as memories of Carl’s disappearance rushed back to her mind. She took a deep breath, quickly regaining her composure. “Not this year, sweetheart. Let’s make a new one together, okay?” Holly looked a bit disappointed but nodded, understanding that change was part of their new life.
As the sun set, Kate helped Holly into her new costume. She carefully tugged the hood into place while Holly bounced on her toes, bursting with anticipation. “Have fun and stay safe, okay?” Kate called out as Holly dashed off to join her friends, her laughter ringing like a sweet melody in the night air. Watching her daughter disappear into the festivities brought a moment of peace to Kate’s heart, a brief feeling of normalcy amidst the chaos.
Not long after, trick-or-treaters began arriving at the door. Kate greeted each one with smiles and candy, her spirits lifting with each colorful costume and joyful giggle. Then, a little girl approached the door, and Kate froze. The intricate design of the girl’s costume, the familiar fabric, it was just like the costumes Carl used to make for Holly. Kate’s heart raced as she managed a trembling smile. “Where did you get your costume, sweetie?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
The little girl beamed with pride. “My dad made it!” she exclaimed. Kate’s pulse quickened. “Could you…show me where your house is?” she asked, her curiosity overpowering her apprehension. The girl nodded eagerly, leading Kate a few streets away. As they reached the doorstep, Kate’s breath caught in her throat. There, handing out candy, stood Carl — alive.
For a moment, time stood still as their eyes met, both filled with shock and a flood of memories. “Hi,” Kate whispered, her heart pounding in her chest. “Hi,” he replied softly, the weight of their shared history hanging in the air. They stood there, words failing them, but the silence spoke volumes. After a long pause, Carl sighed, his expression heavy with regret. “I’m sorry, Kate. I didn’t know how to tell you the truth.”
Trembling, Kate finally found her voice. “What truth, Carl?” She searched his face for answers. He looked away, guilt etched deep on his features. “I met someone else. Her name is Rachel,” he confessed, his voice shaky. “The little girl is like family to me now.”
His words felt like a knife to Kate’s heart, but she swallowed hard, holding back tears. “And what about Holly and me? We’re your family too.” Carl looked down, regret evident in his posture. “I couldn’t live in two worlds anymore, Kate. I had to choose.”
The weight of his words crushed her, but somehow, Kate managed to hold her head high. “Then be happy, Carl. That’s all you can do,” she said firmly. Turning away, she walked back down the steps, her heart heavy yet resolute. Each step felt like a weight lifting, allowing her to breathe again.
Back at her house, Holly’s laughter welcomed her, candy spilling from her bucket as she danced around in her new costume. Kate enveloped her in a warm hug, feeling a surge of love for her daughter. In that moment, she realized that the life she shared with Holly was the one she would cherish and nurture. “We’ll make new memories, just the two of us,” she whispered, knowing they would find joy together without looking back.
