Our country’s veterans have sacrificed so much for us. They’ve given up their homes, their families, their comfort, and their safety, all to fight for us and protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. While veterans do get some benefits, like small discounts and perks, those are nothing compared to the tremendous sacrifices they’ve made.
But not everyone understands the depth of what these veterans have done. That was the case when a young veteran walked up to the counter at a fast food restaurant to order his meal. After placing his order, he asked if the restaurant offered a military discount. What happened next was something he didn’t expect.
A woman standing behind him in line spoke up, saying, “You’re being rude asking for a discount. You think you’re entitled to special privileges just because you served in the military.”
The young soldier was probably shocked by her words, but he didn’t hesitate to set her straight.
“It’s not a privilege, it’s a discount,” he said firmly. “A privilege is getting to go home. To go home to your family every night. To go home in a free country.”
He paused for a moment, looking directly at the woman, then added, “Some people give up their privileges so people like you can have them.”
The woman fell silent, her face red with embarrassment. But it didn’t stop there. As the young soldier was about to pay, a girl in line stepped forward and said, “I’ll cover your meal.” Not only that, but the manager of the store, witnessing the entire exchange, decided to give the veteran his meal for free.
The young soldier left the restaurant with his head held high, and hopefully, the woman behind him learned an important lesson that day: Veterans deserve our respect.
