But after I received a 30% raise, he began saying I should cover the bills since I earn more. Whenever I pushed back or asked why, he would say, ‘the 30%—that’s why,’ as if I didn’t deserve my raise or it was unfair.”
Before heading out one night, she firmly told him she wouldn’t pay for dinner this time. He had tricked her into paying before, often asking her to foot the bill in front of others. She’d always been polite, just smiling and paying to avoid conflict, especially in restaurants. Just last Tuesday, when he invited her to dinner with his friends, she made her stance clear: “I won’t be paying for everyone’s meals.”
