On Reddit, a woman shared a story that sparked a lot of discussion. She talked about how her fiancé teased her for earning more money than he did. Lately, he started expecting her to pay for meals, not just for them but also for his friends.
She explained, “My fiancé (37) and I got engaged five months ago. We usually avoid talking about money because he doesn’t like it. But after I received a 30% raise, he began saying I should cover the bills since I earn more. Whenever I pushed back or asked why, he would say, ‘the 30%—that’s why,’ as if I didn’t deserve my raise or it was unfair.”
Before heading out one night, she firmly told him she wouldn’t pay for dinner this time. He had tricked her into paying before, often asking her to foot the bill in front of others. She’d always been polite, just smiling and paying to avoid conflict, especially in restaurants. Just last Tuesday, when he invited her to dinner with his friends, she made her stance clear: “I won’t be paying for everyone’s meals.”
He seemed fine with it, saying, “Got this, no worries.” But as they sat down for dinner, he leaned over and whispered, “You’re going to pay again.” She calmly replied, “No.” She could feel he was counting on her to stay quiet in front of his friends. He pushed, saying, “You have enough money to pay for everyone’s food.”
That was the last straw. Anger bubbled up inside her. After she finished her own meal, she decided to leave. “I kept my cool instead of reacting angrily. After our orders were taken and the bills were divided, I paid for mine, excused myself to the bathroom, then slipped out and drove home.”
Later, her fiancé started calling and texting, asking where she was. She replied, telling him how upset she felt that he had put her in that awkward position and had tricked her into paying for him and his friends. “I told him I was going home and then stopped responding,” she said.
About an hour later, he showed up at her place, furious. He yelled, calling her selfish, irrational, a cheapskate, and childish for leaving him with a bill he couldn’t pay. He had to call his brother for help! Their argument escalated, and when it finally ended, he stormed out. His friends didn’t know what to say to her, but he told her they were disappointed in her actions and suggested he rethink the kind of woman he wanted to marry.
In the end, she was left wondering if she had been too harsh or if it was time to reevaluate their relationship.
