How to Feed Lentils to Your Dog

Lentils are packed with plant-based proteins. But can dogs eat lentils, and if so, how should they be prepared? We’ll clarify!

Can Dogs Eat Lentils?

They are small, round, and full of plant-based proteins. For us, lentils are considered healthy legumes, and together with chickpeas and beans, they have become indispensable in many stews and curries. But what about our furry friends, who stare at us with their begging eyes while we enjoy cooking lentils in the kitchen? For your dog, only cooked lentils are allowed. Raw lentils, on the other hand, are toxic and have no place in a dog’s bowl!

In addition to the high content of plant-based protein, lentils also contain complex carbohydrates, many fibers, antioxidants, and B-vitamins. Moreover, they are a true mineral booster, providing the (canine) body with zinc, iron, magnesium, and folic acid.

How to Feed Lentils to Your Dog

If you don’t want to withhold the valuable properties of lentils from your dog, you should wash and cook them well before feeding. Cooled and mixed into the food, a few lentils can provide some variety and healthy nutrients in the bowl. However, keep in mind that in high-quality complete pet foods, the individual nutrients are already balanced, so proteins, vegetables and fruits, minerals, and fats are present in sufficient quantities.

So, should I not feed lentils to my dog? It depends! In a vegetarian or even vegan dog diet, you can often find lentils in the ingredient list of dog food manufacturers. Just like for us humans, lentils also offer valuable protein for our dogs. In combination with other foods, they can be a good alternative to conventional meat-based nutrition – provided that all the nutrients your four-legged friend needs are covered in an appropriate way!

Are you curious and would like to try vegetarian or vegan dog food? With iHugDogs GREEN, you can supply your dog with valuable nutrients on a plant-based basis. For example, our “Green Vegan” wet food contains protein-rich lentils and lupines, as well as quinoa, Swiss chard, sweet potato, and zucchini. All perfectly balanced to meet your dog’s nutritional needs.

When Are Lentils Toxic to Dogs?

As you’ve learned, you should always serve your four-legged friend cooked lentils. In their raw state, these legumes, as small as they are, are toxic to dogs and can cause poisoning symptoms. The reason is that raw lentils (just like raw beans and chickpeas) contain the substance phasin. This substance is toxic to our dogs and, when fed regularly or in excessive amounts, can lead to agglutination of red blood cells and severe gastrointestinal complaints, up to internal bleeding.

If your dog has feasted on a package of raw lentils, promptly seek a veterinary clinic. With the help of an injection, your four-legged friend can be induced to vomit and treated accordingly.

Which Vegetables are Suitable for Dogs?

As a tasty topping occasionally, lentils can be used, but they are probably unsuitable as a tasty snack for in-between. If you want to treat your dog and occasionally offer some fresh fruit or vegetables, it’s better to go for a crunchy carrot, a piece of sweet banana, or a juicy apple slice.

You can also feed your dog effortlessly with our “BARF Complete,” providing tasty, fresh ingredients. The menu already contains everything your four-legged friend needs daily: fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, minerals, and oils. All measured and portioned, super fresh and delicious!
